Getting Connected

When you move, you need to make new friends, as soon as possible. The sooner you find a friend and start going out to explore your new place, the better off you’ll be. You can’t feel lonely if you’re out having a good time!

You might be able to find some friends through:

  • Meetup.com
  • Expat Women
  • A local church or religious organization
  • Volunteer opportunities in your new city
  • An exercise class or at your gym
  • Classes of any kind—uni, cooking, photography, surfing, etc.
  • Work

Expat Blogs
Another way to connect that is becoming more popular is through blogging. Expat blogs are a great consolation—you end up realizing that your gripes are common and your experiences are often similar to those of expats from your motherland. Plus, some expat bloggers are taking cyber friendships into the real world by meeting up for drinks and activities.

Below are a few of the great American-in-Australia expat blogs out there:

Social Media
There is also the social media route—connecting through networks and geography—but this may be a more difficult endeavor. Most people won’t connect through Facebook unless they know you, but if you follow local expats or those with common interests on Twitter, you never know when you might learn about a meet up or gathering through a tweet.
