The One That Got Away

I really am not a fan of Maison Martin Margiela. But perhaps the wonder of the brand is that it can take a sack of a dress and make it look supreme. As in the Margiela for H&M collab, which was a re-edition of the brand’s more iconic pieces.

I have no choice but to class this as “the one that got away.” Sigh. Might be the only time I’ve longed for an H&M in my ‘hood. Lord, and THE BOOTS! Double sigh.

Yeah, I know I could maybe (like right now) get the dress on eBay. But you know what it’s like trying on something with no frame of reference for sizing. Do I dare enter the non-refundable, non-exchangeable world of eBay?

Is there a collection that got away from you?

  1. This collection got away from me! I was totally into the ankle boot version of these you have here. I found the last pair and they were my size, but they fit super snug in the toe and the $350 price tag on my college student budget was a no go 🙁 Between Target and H&M, this is the first collection I’ve been able to witness in person. I was thoroughly impressed with its scope.

And in my opinion, you’d rock that dress. As for the eBay battle….not sure it’s worth it.

    1. Thanks, Melanie! Yeah, buying the boots without being able to try them on first…I don’t think so. I have a feeling they’d be too big in the calf, which is a common problem for me. And the eBay battle—I’m with you! Probably not worth it. Which is why I almost never consider eBay for anything other than handbags.

  2. Vahni, I have an eBay store and actually many sellers will accept returns (though I’m not one of them!). I looked up this dress on eBay and you can get it from England or Germany for less than $200 including shipping. Both are no returns though and I’m just not so sure about this One size design. I’m too curvy to wear anything too boxy.

As for collections that got away? I can’t think of one right now. If Valentino ever does one for H&M or Target, that would be a temptation that would be hard to resist!

    1. Thanks for the research, Serene. I have the same reservations about the dress. Looks so chic on the model, but in real life, it will probably make me look five times bigger than I am. I’m going to use that thought to console myself…and keep myself from ordering. Really, it’s all about the boots. A similar dress can probably be found. Oh well.

    1. Hi Katja, welcome! It seems as though the craftsmanship of the pieces in this collection was exceptional (for H&M), according to those who were able to see them in person. This look really got to me, but alas, it is not to be. 🙁

Thanks for your comment and for the follow!

  3. OK, those boots are amazing. I think they might be the ones that got away,

I didn’t pay any attention at all to this release because, like you, I’m not a big Maison Martin Margiela fan. But if anyone could rock that dress it would be you. I honestly think a potato sack would look amazing on you, especially the way you’d accessorize said potato sack!

I don’t know that hunting it down on ebay would be worth it – it’s risky and people go crazy with the price gauging. You never know though!

  4. I wasn’t that excited about MMM’s collection for H&M, but those boots are gorgeous! It has to be the Zara cut away pumps/courts that sold really well last year and I keep kicking myself for not getting them and they were super cheap too! – I think you also liked those too!

    Kalo mina girl!

    1. Oh, I know the pair you are talking about. Kicking myself too. But now that Zara offers online ordering, I literally check the site for new arrivals like every day. Although so much of what Zara sells is ubiquitous on fashion blogs, since there is no Zara in my city, it means no one else here ever has my stuff! Yay!

  5. The boots are serious! Love them

I wasn’t really taken back by the men’s pieces for the collection. I also didn’t realise Margiela doesn’t own or design for the company any more, but that’s going off track.

I was really amped for the Lanvin collab they did but when their online site epically failed on me I lost the desire to get anything. As soon as it goes on ebay you know you’re going to pay silly prices for them.

On reflection the things I had planned to buy I really didn’t need but I guess it would have been nice to have a few of the pieces.

    1. That’s what I kind of always realize after the fact…these are not things I ever really “need”! And life goes on without them!

  6. Ahh Margiela – you know I went to H&M in London and tried on a couple of things including the shoes, and in the end I wasn’t convinced. I took a brutally objective friend to opine which helped. I tried the wedge shoes with the perspex heel and they were the only things that nearly made me hand over the credit card but at the price they were my friend said – you have to really really love them. But that pointed toe (that is on the boot too) was really pinching on my toes. So no go. My advice, pick up the real deal on the Outnet. There’s stuff on there that actually is not really that much more than some of the H&M pieces and you can return it if it doesn’t fit.

  7. Very late with my blog reading (insanely crazy from end of Nov through end of Dec with all our birthdays mixed with holidays, ugh!) However in NYC there is still LOADS of the Margiela collection at H&M, including the shoes. I was there a few weeks ago, and this wasn’t even at one of the flagships. I’m always popping in, so if you’d like me to look drop me an email. Personally I gravitated to the dress but I’m too tiny and it would look like a sack on me. The other piece I really loved was the MC jacket. However for the price, I can get a Schott (the real thing) that’ll last me forever (the last one I bought and still wear was over 30 years ago.) Plus, the leather is so cheap and stiff it would take a dogs age to soften it up properly. Actually I think I recall some items getting marked down already as it didn’t go over as well as they’d hoped (here at least, surprising as you would think this is where it would sell out first.) XXX

    1. Hi Suzanne! Yes, quite curious that in NY, of all places, the collection didn’t fly off the shelves. Of course, not all of the collection was good, but I also think designer collabs are kind of over. We’ve finally realized they really ARE too good to be true.

  8. Hi dear Vahni, hope all is well with you! I can get you a dress if you pay pal me? Saw it in the shop just yesterday. It is one size, belted, quite heavy in the feel. Delicious. Happy new year to you! Love, Anika
