Pre-Party and IFB Con in New York

Whew. Oh my goodness, I am literally just coming up for air after a whirlwind trip to New York for the Independent Fashion Bloggers Conference, which was superb, as those of you who caught the livestream saw. Sorry to be so tardy with this post. I am utterly exhausted.

‘Twas the Night Before #IFBCon

After narrowly avoiding a half-mile long queue for taxis at LaGuardia (ugh, welcome to New York in the rain), I swooped into my Chelsea-based hotel just in time to change and scoop up lovely roomie Anika before heading off to tres luxe Mandarin Oriental hotel. And let the record show that my other roomie was supposed to have been B of Beautifully Invisible who fell ill and was unable to attend, and I’m still devastated I didn’t get to meet her. We so missed you, B! But good to know you are better.

I tweeted a confession before heading to New York: I would not take my DSLR because I found that last time, it was too cumbersome, and I never took a single photo. All photos included here have been borrowed, or taken via iPhone 4, which for a blogger, is (almost) all you need if you want to tweet and Instagram photos on the fly, and explains this crazy hodgepodge of image formats. I do think a point-and-shoot will be part of my future arsenal. There are times you need a flash and higher resolution without the backbreaking bulk of a DSLR.

Here are shots of the little soirée I had with IFB before the conference, followed by shots from the conference itself. Forgive me if I don’t post a proper narrative with all of this. I’m seriously still exhausted and so behind on blog updates.

IFB Conference at Milk Studios

After a few hours of sleep, I rose bright and early to head to Milk Studios for #IFBCon, where I was a panelist on the first panel of the day: Bloggers Toolkit. It was such an honor to be invited to participate, and even as an attendee, I thoroughly enjoyed the conference and meeting so many bloggers in person. Thanks to all of you who came by to say hello and meet me in person. It was such a treat!

He was such a fantastic keynote speaker, and he gets bloggers. I appreciate that!

I have more posts/photos/videos from the conference and New York coming soon, so check back this week, lovelies!

Hiya, wow, I wasn’t expecting to see myself in this post (And thank you to foxy Lee for taking that picture of us)! You look SO good in every picture and it was so wonderful to meet you in person! Thank you again for inviting me to the cocktail party, I had such a great time! And the panel you were on was so good and informative. I can imagine you are wiped out, I know I am still recovering myself and have other events this week. Love your new Gucci belt, btw. I can’t wait to see it in an outfit post. Do it soon, mama!

Haaa! It was a pleasure to meet you, Jill! Thanks for your sweet comment and for including me in a post on YOUR blog as well!

Will try to shoot the belt soon. Lately I’m so over outfit posts. That’s pretty bad for a fashion blogger, right? I think I’ll be more enthusiastic when the weather gets a little cooler.

The pre-party looked like a good time. So bummed I missed it, and the opportunity to meet you as well! Let me know next time your in the city. Oh, and I never thanked you for pushing me to get what us bloggers deserve. It worked out in the end, and honestly, if you didn’t urge me to do so, I prob. would have just let it pass me by.

Hey Jen, will definitely let you know next time I’m in NY.

So awesome to hear that your counter offer (so-to-speak) was accepted and things worked out in your favor. That’s fantastic! Loved your Saks coverage. If you get a sec, drop me a line and let me know how the negotiating went. I’m so curious!

Was this the first time you’d met Jill or Bella? I’d be interested to hear about meet-ups like this as I know I get an “image” of a blogger in my mind and I always wonder how it compares with the real deal. You look smashing.

      Terri~

I’m so glad you asked this question because it has been on my mind since the conference. Since this was my second time going to IFBCon, and I stayed in NY longer, I had the chance to spend more time with lots of bloggers, and you know what I discovered? Sometimes that image doesn’t come across the same in real life. I was going to write a post about this, but I actually think it would come off sounding really arrogant, so I decided not to.

But since you asked, I will say this: I was quite surprised when I met some larger-than-life bloggers in person and they were dry and rather reserved—as one most beloved blogger friend put it, “like a box of valium.” I was even more surprised when I met others with whom I’ve developed relationships, and I thought would be really interested in hanging out and discussing life beyond blogging, but they didn’t seem interested in getting to know me at ALL in real life. There were some I tried to talk to, but after I scratched the surface, the bravado and personality I have come to appreciate online was not there. It is hugely disappointing, really, cause it makes me kind of think that I really can’t be bothered with them anymore if they’re all talk behind-the-scenes and totally self-absorbed or socially inept in real life. I don’t know. I don’t know if it’s aloofness, shyness, lack of social graces, disinterest on their part, or what.

I know this sounds harsh, but it’s the truth. Some people are even more fun in person, some are a big ol’ let down. Guess that’s just the way it is.

Thanks for asking the question…I was dying to discuss this!

It was such fun to look at your snaps and read a bit about the IFB conference – those of us who couldn’t go to NYC must live vicariously through you and the other bloggers who attended! :)

Vahni! Yes, wine next time with our pizza for sure! I am reading your reply to Terri and I have to say I had the same experience and I know we are not the only ones who felt it. I obviously did meet people who I think are as super stellar in life as they are online, but for me there definitely were disconnects as well and it made me kinda sad. I really did cling onto people who met my expectations of their persona because I was a bit disenchanted by a few exchanges. Buuuut with that said, I don’t want to assume the relationships I’ve made online are less than what I’ve thought and felt and attending IFB and all the blog events after was a great experience because I really got to meet some real gems that I hope to know for a long long while.

It looks like it was a blast! I can’t tell you HOW MUCH I wish I could have been there!!! Maybe next year, depending on how fast my new blog grows…..haha. The photos are beautiful! I was able to watch some of the conference live online and I must say it was a wealth of information; I learned so much!

Thanks as always for your amazing blog, advice to fellow bloggers and your posts. :)
