Friend Friday 101: How to Get Started

Y’all know I’ve been participating in the Friend Friday project by Modly Chic for a loooong time now. Friend Friday—actually, it’s Fashion Beauty Friend Friday—is a weekly series that allows participating bloggers to share more about themselves (and create a friendly connection with others) by posting answers to a set list of questions related to beauty, fashion, and blogging.

Recently, the lovely Jessica of Enchanted Vintage (had to include the shot of her below…I’m smitten…isn’t she gorge?) asked how it all works, if I have ever covered it here on G&G. It’s something I’ve been asked before, but this time I thought, OK, this is another how-to post waiting to happen! And clearly, the tech writer in me is dying to get out on occasion. That, or I’m a sucker for self-torture.

Anyway, for those who have always wondered how it works, here you go.

How to Participate in Fashion Beauty Friend Friday

  1. Join the Fashion Beauty Friend Friday Google Group.

  2. After you’ve been given access, log in and look for the current week’s questions pinned to the top of the list.
Questions are posted by Wednesday of the same week, and occasionally they are posted a few weeks in advance.

  3. Click on the link to the questions. If there are multiple replies visible when you open the link, remember that the first link from Katy is the one with the questions.

  4. In a new browser window or tab, create a post on your blog.

  5. Copy the questions from the Google Group post and paste to the editor in your blog.

  6. Complete your post, making sure that you include a link back to Modly Chic, and schedule for publication on Friday.

  7. On Friday, go to Modly Chic and look for the Katy’s Friend Friday post on the home page. Scroll down to the Mister Linky’s Magical Widget’s module at the end of the post. Add your blog name and your Friend Friday post URL, then click Enter.

  8. Leave a comment on the current Modly Chic Friend Friday post, then check out some others and leave comments there as well!

Fashion Beauty Friend Friday Tips & Tricks

So you’ve joined. This is my personal approach to maximizing my participation in Friend Friday, while also making it my own.

  • Make questions bold, or format them as subheadings to make them stand out from your answers. My questions aren’t numbered, but some people do include the numbers. It’s totally up to you.
  • Rearrange questions if you feel they flow better on the page in a different order.
  • Add at least one relevant image to bring visual interest to your post. If the image isn’t yours, be sure to name the source and link to it.
  • U.S. participants, schedule your post for 12:01 am Friday, Eastern Time. My readers are all over the world, and yours probably are too, so Friday comes earlier for some (hello, Australia!). Give your overseas readers the opportunity to catch your post on their Friday morning.
  • Schedule a tweet about your post. Be sure to use the #FBFF hashtag.
  • Share other #FBFF posts on Twitter that resonated with you. With the hashtag, of course.

PS: Once you join the Fashion Beauty Friend Friday Google Group, you’ll probably notice that it is a great resource for more than just the weekly questions. In fact, it has become quite the blogger support group! Topics related to blogging, tech questions, and more are often posted, and the group is quite helpful.

  1. well i’ve been doing FBFF since august, so i didn’t really need the how-to, but it WAS interesting to see your process. i’d never even thought about scheduling the post for midnight. it’s so brilliant! i think i’m definitely going to start doing that from now on.

  2. Very clear how to!

Though: post at 12.01 if you are in the US only! if I (in the UK) posted at midnight, it’s still Thursday night in the US! and that would really confuse everyone!

  3. Thanks a mill Vahni for the how to and the mention!! Logged onto my hotmail, opened up the Grit and Glamour email and saw… my face. Got a bit of a shock. A nice one though…x

  4. It’s sooo amazing how much FBFF has grown since I joined last summer!! It’s amazing!! And of course, nobody breaks anything down as well as you do! 🙂

    1. The growth IS amazing, I agree. I remember waaaay back when there were like five links at the end of the page. And now 100+…WOW!

      Thanks, MJ!

  5. You’re always so on top of what your readers are after and you deliver every time. I always look forwrad to reading your Friend Friday posts. The topics are always so relevant to what’s going on in the blogosphere. xoxo

  6. This is so well-written and incredibly helpful. I love to read Friend Friday posts but I don’t think I can participate because even with these clear-as-a-bell instructions the whole thing sounds overwhelming and makes me want to take a nap.I think it’s because I can barely keep up with two kids and blogging twice a week. I will just enjoy everybody else’s Friend Fridays!

  7. Okay, just applied for membership. Thanks for this, V! I actually took part once before, not realizing there was a Google group. I think I just snatched the questions from Katy’s post. Ha! I’m always excited for Fridays to read everyone’s answers so we’ll see if I can come up with some interesting ones myself.

  8. Thanks V, I was really curious about this. Not quite curious enough to get off my lazy caboose and do my own investigating but as usual you’ve given me just the boot in the booty I needed!

  9. Great guide! I would have loved to have this a few months ago when I was just joining FBFF. I was a little bit scared I was out of my league, and I also had the hardest time finding the questions that first time. Then I realized it was right at the top and pretty obvious. I’m just a little slow!

  10. Great introduction to Friend Friday for the newbie. Katy has done a great job and it is so cool to see the growth of the group. It’s amazing to see over 100 links on Friday.

  11. Vahni – Just saw this after having been away! Thanks a million. Not sure why I never thought of doing a post like this but you nailed it perfectly! – Katy

    1. No worries, Katy! I know that #FBFF kind of exploded and sometimes it’s just hard to anticipate what everyone needs when you’ve got so much going on!

  12. Hello Vahni! I’m new to visiting your site and am so impressed with all of your how-to’s! This one is also super clear and helpful for those wanting to join #FBFF. Thanks for all of your how-to love for the blogging community! I’ll definitely be spending some time reading up on your how-to’s 🙂

    1. Hi Lindsay, welcome to G&G! So glad you found me and that my posts have been helpful for you. Please feel free to share them with others you know who might benefit from them!

  13. very cool… it seems a bit complicated but I am going to try setting it up during spring break when I have time to figure it out. Thanks for posting steps on how we can join #FBFF. I had never even heard of it until reading your post.
