Friend/Follow/Fan Friday!

Fridays are kinda big in the fashion blogosphere.

We’ve got our Friend Friday* (#FBFF) posts, which I usually participate in; Follow Friday (#FF) on Twitter; and that last push-one-more-post-out-before-the-end-of-the-week frenzy since we all know fashion bloggers don’t blog on Saturdays. They shop. Or date. Or wine. Or dine. Or all of the above, which for me, is the making of a perfect weekend.

This is not a Friend Friday post.

This week’s Friend Friday topic is about how bloggers participate in blog events—like 30 for 30—and still maintain their individual blog personas. I am not participating this week since I don’t participate in collective endeavors like 30 for 30 (30 wardrobe staples remixed for 30 days, with no shopping) or GAAD (the Great American Apparel Diet). And that’s because:

  1. I don’t have the time to shoot photos and post them daily.
  2. I’m too self-indulgent and I have a very short attention span.
  3. Life is too short to limit myself to only 30 pieces of my wardrobe, even if for only 30 days.
  4. You never know when a good sale might happen.

I don’t know how y’all do it, but hats off to you! Anyway.

This is a Friendly Friday post.

Since Friday somehow became the day of love and friendship in the blogosphere, I’m going to use my post for the day to cover a couple things. First…

Yes, that fashion blogger conference. The one that just made the Harper’s Bazaar New York Fashion Week Hot List!

So excited. Truly. And I’ll be even more excited if my All Saints order arrives today as scheduled, and it’s perfect. That aside, several lovelies have contacted me about meeting up in New York—I’m only there Wednesday through half of Friday next week, and here is where you can find me:

  • Wednesday, February 9—Wine Down Blogger Meetup
Click the image for event details in Facebook.
  • Thursday, February 10—Evolving Influence Conference and After Party at The Chelsea Room.
When I’m not moderating from 11:00am to 12:30pm EST, I’ll be in the audience, probably tweeting my little fingers off.  If you’ll be there, please come find me and say hello! If you plan to follow from afar, click over to G&G that day. I’ll have a post set up to make it a cinch to follow and feel involved, no matter where you are in the world.
Evolving Influence 2011If you didn’t score a ticket before they sold out, you could win one! Find out how you to win IFB Evolving Influence Conference Tickets, and some sweet swag—a video recorder and your video, professionally edited and distributed.
  • Friday, February 11, 2011—Evolving Influence Workshops
That is, if I can get in. They are completely booked, so I don’t know. If not, I might have some free time that day. TBD.

Facebookers and friends, please welcome G&G to the dark side…

Speaking of being friendly, I’ve revived the Grit & Glamour Facebook page. Make no bones about it—I still detest Facebook for many reasons aside from the fact that is is an impossible application to work with. OK, that wasn’t very friendly.

Apparently the majority of the free world prefers to get its social media fix there…and oh, that little meetup invitation on Wednesday next week? Facebook. I can’t escape. So as they say, if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em. I’ve tried to find many of your blog pages and add them as G&G favorites. If I missed you and you have a page, please let me know.

*The Friend Friday project by Modly Chic is a way for fashion bloggers to share more about themselves and create a friendly connection with other bloggers. Join the Fashion Beauty Friend Friday Google Group to participate.

  1. I laughed at bloggers don’t blog on Saturday. So true! I’m trying to do 30 for 30 for the first time and it is definitely a challenge. I’ve never done daily outfit posts before so I’m not starting now. I just take a couple of pictures of each outfit and roll several days into one. My lazy version of 30×30 I guess? We’ll see how it goes, I guess!

    1. Good luck, Katie! I say I don’t blog on Saturday, but here I am trying to respond to some comments before I get going on my day…

  2. No body wants to read on Saturdays. You gotta pick your battles.

Whooot! I am so excited for you going to the Blogger conference. I am so sticking to my comp all day and watching the live streaming. And I am just exciting because you’ve posted a new post. I feel like a kitten drunk on a bowl of milk- lapping it up!

Now where’s that yarn ball? I’m feeling frisky!
    the Citizen Rosebud

    1. No doubt! Thanks again for your enthusiasm and support regarding IFB, Bella. It really means so much, especially since some bloggers I have supported in the past haven’t even acknowledged my participation in this. Kinda hurts. I support fellow bloggers because I want to see them do well, but we all want a little love back, you know?!

  3. As for me, I laughed at ‘you never know when a good sale might happen’ -yeah, i’m so with you on that on doll!
    Thanks for you CNY wishes!

Looking forward to your updates! Have a rocking weekend!

  4. That’s right.. we don’t blog on saturdays..!! But I do photograph on the weekends sometimes.
I’ll be definitely coming for drinks on wed night.
And if we can’t get in on Friday.. we will go shop.. hahahaha
Ps.. You are probably know that I will be photographing you, right??
    See you next week V.
    Lee x

  5. lol i totally agree with you about the collective blogging challenges. I’m too lazy and uncreative to pick only 30 items for a month. and yeah, i shop way too much to put a ban on myself (although i should definitely try sometime). i’m so jealous you get to go to IFB conference and Fashion Week! You know it’s a big deal if Harper’s Bazaar picks it up! Have fun- I’ll be watching for updates ::)

    Beneath the Glass

    1. Thanks for your comment, Suzy! I probably should put a ban on myself, but I lack the will power!

Hope you will watch for #IFBCon updates. It’s going to rock!

  6. Oh, have fun! It’ll be so amazing, wish i could be there. I am liking you on facebook now too! I am with you with not being keen, i have a blog fan page too, but i never really do anything with it, it just synchs my posts. It’s used mainly for my real life friends to read my blog I think.

Funnily enough, I usually spend most of saturday daytime scheduling my posts for the week ahead. That is when i blog most, and then i have saturday night and sunday computer free! Though I never post anything much on saturday itself, just links a la mode.

    1. Thank you Franca, for the support here and like on FB! Liked you back.

I probably would spend Saturdays doing more blog stuff, but that’s Hubby’s day with me. And I’m usually out and about all day. But you know, there just never seems to be enough time when it comes to my blog. There’s so much behind-the-scenes stuff to be done, aside from posts and comments.

  7. I will not be able to attend the IFB, but I will be there in spirit watching the livestream! I have made a list on Twitter of all the amazing people to follow including you! I don’t have much time to do outfit posts, however it something I want to add to my blog because I bet my readers are wondering how do I dress or what is my style? Welcome to the dark side of Facebook. 🙂

    1. Thank you Paulette! I plan to have some things set up here on G&G to make it easy to follow.

And thanks for the FB welcome!

  8. This post is such a lovely alternative to the Friend Friday questions when they don’t apply to you!

I’m attempting the 30 for 30 Challenge. Not sure how long I’ll keep up with the daily photos – that is a challenge!! Also having to think about outfits all of the time is a challenge! We’ll just see!

Have fun in NYC – v jealous! Will be following all of your tweets! 🙂 xx

    1. Thanks, Emily! I tend to be a bit rogue, hence this post. I am wishing you luck on your 30 for 30 participation, though!

Don’t know how much I’ll get to tweet on the day of the conference…I’m suddenly obligated to a couple different things that day. More on that in the future. But I will try to share some behind-the-scenes stuff, or a least a slightly different perspective that you at home might not get to see.

  9. I wish I could meet you!! Unfortunately I will still be in school during that time. Maybe another time! I can not wait to hear and see all the pictures and such from the conference!!

    1. Aw, me too! I’m sure we’ll have a chance in the future, though. I can’t wait to share my experiences in NY with all of you!

  10. That daily photoshoot thing is a pain in the ***…. You have some good points about the 30X30 – which I am doing right now. Don’t know how I am going to handle it all. I hate missing sales! And I have a lot of good stuff in my closet that I am missing right now.
Love this alternative to FF – great idea V!!
Enjoy the IFB – I know you will be a great moderator and I can’t wait to see the photos Lee takes of you!

  11. Uh oh, Vahni is on Facebook?! Ooh girl! I shall be on the dark side with my shades on! LOL

Yes, you made some excellent points about the 30×30, especially when it comes to taking pictures everyday. So far this week I’ve only skipped one day, but I started a bit early so I still had content to keep up. For me, using the camera, tripod, and photoediting on most days is helping me learn how to take outfit photos by myself, finding places with the best light, etc. Before this, I didn’t have a clue so I’m thankful for that!

I soo wished I could get to that conference! I’ll be watching it on livestream though for sure!!

    1. Ha!!!! Yup, I’m there, much to my chagrin.

I’m still dying to see a post like this: 30 for 30…WHY I QUIT IT! I couldn’t do it. Seriously. that would be my post after about a week or so, I’m sure. Anyway, I wish you luck, MJ!

      Thanks for your support, doll!

  12. O yeah!! Welcome back to Facebook!!I am so glad you are on, I have looked for you a million times and now this post makes sense! HAHA!
I am SO excited for you and the incredible opp you have to speak at the IFB conference!I know you will be amazing and I just wish that I could be there to see and meet you in person!!
I will be watching live though dont worry!!

    1. Ha! I can be pretty evasive, right?! Well now you know how I really feel about FB. But thanks for your support there, and here, my dear!

Maybe next #IFBCon we can meet, Would so love to!

  13. To be honest I’ve yet to review the questions I’m not really into blogging events other than FBFF so I may have little to say. Awww I always wondered why you eluded facebook I’ve liked you, I also have a facebook page that I’ve just set up. I tend to find facebook a bit of a pain in the… now a days I HATE all those app requests for things like farmville and texas hold them poker. I like the simplicity of twitter so tend to spend a lot more time on there.

    1. Amen to the FB hate. That’s why my personal profile gives little away about me. I just don’t like the app and it has wreaked havoc in my personal life, plus who has the time to post about their every whim? I can’t stand it. It’s TMI. The G&G page feeds itself, so that’s not a worry.

Anyway, thanks for popping over! And for the like. I liked you too.

  14. I LOVE the fact that even though you’ll be AT the conference, you will have a post setup to make it easy for everyone to follow from home/work. Just like you did last time. Has anyone recently told you how much you rock?! 🙂 Thank you for that.

Also – welcome to Facebook, and thank you for following my Fan Page! I added you to my faves as well. Right now I don’t do much other than post automatically from my blog. I tried connecting it to my twitter feed but I don’t like having everything post automatically. I need to figure out if there is an alternative method for that. If you figure anything out, please write a tutorial! HAH!

    Have a great weekend, doll!

    1. Thank you, B! I do my best. You are so kind and so generous with your compliments. Thank you, seriously.

No worries about FB…thanks for your support too. I yanked the Twitter feed to the G&G page too. I have an alternative for you, honey: @HootSuite. Get it. You will love it. You can selectively post tweets to FB and Twitter at the same time, or schedule them. It is brilliant!

  15. I love that I’m on your facebook screenshot ha! I deleted my facebook account before I started blogging because I decided it was evil and served no purpose for me, but I’ve been seriously considering joining the dark side once again so that I can better serve my blog. There have been a ton of things lately in the blogosphere that have required me to creep onto facebook through a friends or family members page so that I could either view content or vote for someone in a contest. Hmmmm… I will have to put some thought into it over the weekend.

Speaking of the weekend. I don’t like to blog on Saturday’s either. In fact the only time I usually do is when I’m at work. Unfortunately, I work tomorrow. So, I’ll be hitting the fashion blog world up in weekend style! If anyone cares to join me that would be great. Weekends can sure be lonely in blogland.

I’m SO excited about the conference. I think we should start a Team Vahni for this! I will be watching as much as I possibly can via livestream. I even requested the death shift at work so that I can watch it! x

    1. Brooke, you are right: FB IS EVIL! It has caused so many problems in my life on a personal level. So I don’t really interact on it from that perspective. I basically locked down my personal profile. But like you said, there have been things online and events that could only be accessed through FB, so I had to revive my G&G page at least. If you do go back into FB, try setting up a Center Sage page with an email addy you have NEVER used on FB. I made that mistake already and it aggravates me that I can’t comment as G&G now…I can only comment from my personal account. Sure, you have two different logins, but it would be worth it. Now I feel like I can’t ask everyone to like a new G&G page, and it sucks.

      Anyway, Team Vahni…you are sweet…:)

  16. hehe! Welcome back to the social media dark side. Don’t worry, I have contemplated deleting Facebook and Twitter but it is a great way to keep in touch with my peeps so for now they both stay. I for one will be more than happy to see G&G updates in my timeline.

I am so sad that I can’t attend Evolving Influence. The timing is bad (again). The hubby and I are going to Vegas for his birthday this month. There is just no way I can afford to fly to Vegas and NY in the same month. Boohoo! I WILL DEFINITELY be streaming live, though.

    Have a great weekend!!!

    1. Aw, so wish you could make it, but I understand Vegas and NY…I had to make a similar decision myself.

Thanks for your support on FB! Yeah, I think it’s a total pain in the a**, but one of those necessary evils these days. Gah.

      Enjoy Vegas with Fabrice!

    1. Seriously. Mine is pretty much feeding itself. I can’t do any more, you know? But I must say that Hootsuite is a miracle. I can manage FB and Twitter all in one place!

  17. Oh my gosh, I’m wishing more and more I could go in February!! I won’t be in NYC until March (sad face). I hope you have an amazing time, and I’m so excited for you! I think you are moderating the panel that has one of my old high school chums on it, Keiko Lynn. Say hi to her for me!

Oh and this statement “You never know when a good sale might happen.” – Made me laugh, best statement ever, and I 100% agree with you!

    Kirstin Marie

    1. OMG…you went to high school with Keiko? Crazy! Small world.

Thanks for your comment, Kirstin. Wish you could be there too. But there’s always next time!

  18. hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii!!!!!

i’ve missed you so much!!! welcome to the dark side!! =P i was excited when i saw you were on facebook and happy to be facebook friended. though i definitely agree with what you said about facebook being pretty impossible to work with. my fb is a mess. i get a million spam messages a day, i get tagged in a zillion pics from people who are trying to sell their products, and i hate the random spammy applications that post stuff to my wall. but on the other hand, i get to connect with everyone i’ve ever known in every part of the world. and i do like that a lot.

i can’t believe we’re going to be meeting next week!! i’m so excited. =)

    1. Hi sweetie…yeah so excited about next week! And FB…such a nightmare. Wanted to have a G&G page that allows me to comment as G&G, but since I already set it up under my dormant personal profile, no matter what I did to try and trick FB into separating it using a few of my existing emails, it didn’t work. It basically feeds itself anyway, or I feed it through Hootsuite. Can’t add one more thing to my plate!

      1. yeah there are a few things like that which are very frustrating. i hate that i can’t change the name of my facebook page. i want it to be just kristy elena, not kristy elena fashion design. i had set it up back before i was a blogger and though designing is definitely something i’m very passionate about, it’s not all i do. so it doesn’t really apply anymore. but it’s impossible to change from what i see. =(

    1. Look for me at the conference, Cameron! We’ll see how it goes! I’m sure there will be several of us with some time on our hands on Friday. And thanks for the FB like! Liked you right back!

  19. Thank you all for your support here and on Facebook. I’ve tried to like your pages and add them to G&G faves as I discover them. If I’ve missed you, let me know on the G&G FB wall!

  20. Oh I’m still not on Facebook though the pressure from friends and relatives is getting stronger. After reading some of the stuff you get sent on FB I think I’ll hold off a tad longer.

  21. There does seem to be an unwritten rule about blogging on Saturdays. Ha! I’m so excited to experience the conference via livestream and BLESS YOU for taking care of all of us who’ll be viewing from afar. Obviously I’m “liking” G&G on Facebook right away. Thank you so much for adding me to your favorites – I think I may have blushed when I saw that. I’m not an FB fan either, but it seems that the majority of people I know prefer it over Twitter so. The things we do to keep in touch.

P.S. Personally, I think it’s worth traveling all the way to NYC just for an event called “Wine Down”. Yes, please!

    1. Hi Casee, thank you sweetie! So sad you can’t make Wine Down…thinking of live streaming some of it. We shall see!

  22. My page is following your page! Or at least it should be, I’m still new to this new page stuff. And there is stuff about facebook that drives me crazy, so I know what you mean about it being an impossible application.

  23. Hey V, Id love to get involved in the Friend Fridays, but, as I am a little blond at times, Im not exactly sure how it works! Have you done a post already on how it works? (I tried to find one but maybe Im missing it?)
ps really loving all the posts about the conference, maybe someday Ill make it across the pond to one! (fingers and toes crossed)
