Sunday Coffee: Bella’s Bloomin’ Brilliance, Anna’s Masked Magnificence + 10,000 Other Things

Warning: This is a huge post.

The Cream

This was the most hysterical and relevant post I’ve read all week: Outfit Post: Blooming Madly, by Bella of The Citizen Rosebud. You know how we’ve been talking about constructive criticism…well, another consideration is the backhanded compliment. In her post Bella wittily contemplates compliments she recently received that left her scratching her head. YOU MUST READ IT!

When the other epic Vogue editirix decides to throw a masked ball with an Eyes Wide Shut theme, you know it’s going to be a big hot, tasty, spectacle. Leave it to Carine Roitfeld to celebrate the 90th year of Vogue Paris that very way. And leave it to Anna Dello Russo to steal girlfriend’s thunder. Meow…I think I need that white wig.

Friend Friday Fabulosity
I couldn’t resist sharing this image, which was included in Beautifully Invisible’s post, Friend Friday: Comments and Criticism. So apropo, my fellow bloggers, non?

And while we’re on the subject of Friend Friday, can we ALL give Katy of Modly Chic a HUGE virtual round of applause for starting Friend Friday and some truly meaningful conversation amongst fashion bloggers?Woot!

Katy’s like the Little Engine That Could. She had the courage to approach a handful of bloggers with her idea, and it has totally taken off. As Katy pointed out on Twitter last week, the last Independent Fashion Bloggers Weekly Roundup featured four Friend Friday blog posts—proof that Katy has started something big, and we’re all doing a stellar job posting content that is compelling enough to make the cut. Congrats to Katy and all those who made the list. Fantastic.

Thanks, dolls!
Thank you Katie of Fashion’s Maven for the Blog with Substance Award! This award stipulates that I sum up my blogging philosophy, motivation, and experience using five words*:

It’s supposed to be fun.

Thank you Paulette of Ms. Charm’s Chic for the Happy 101 Award! For this award, I’m supposed to name 10 things I like*:

  1. Men.
  2. Dogs.
  3. High, high heels.
  4. Dirty Bombay Sapphire martinis (with bleu cheese-stuffed olives)….aka sippin’ on gin and juice (see #3 below).
  5. Order.
  6. BMWs.
  7. Black.
  8. Gadgets.
  9. Creme de la Mer.
  10. Reality TV.

Oh, wait. That was my predictable likes list. Here are 10 things I like that you probably didn’t know I like:

  1. Beef jerky, beef sticks, Vienna Sausages, and fried pork skins. Um, yeah. Gas station gastronomy.
  2. Greek soul food (basically, gut stew. Well, gut anything.). Yes, I wrote that.
  3. Snoop, Eminem, Dre, DMX, 50 Cent, and the like.
  4. Rollerball pens and highlighters.
  5. Anesthesia. When you need it, you are reminded it is one of the greatest inventions of the 20th century.
  6. Being the first and the fastest to pull away from a traffic light.
  7. Guns, knives, studs, spikes.
  8. Packing my own bags at the grocery check out.
  9. Toiletries in triplicate. I don’t feel compelled to stockpile food, but I always have extra tissues, T.P., razors, shave gel, etc.
  10. When people/kids wipe out or get hit on America’s Funniest Home Videos. I can’t help it. I’m a total schadenfreude.

Another thank you goes to Veshoevius of The Taxonomy of My Wardrobe—she tagged me after giving us all a glimpse of her amazing wardrobe and life. I will respond to the questions this week!*

Whew, I’m beat. Hope y’all have a cracker of a Sunday! I’m off to play in the corn fields. Details soon.

*The G&G Award Policy: As with most awards, I am expected to pass the award on to others, but that doesn’t gel with my philosophy. Regardless, I remain grateful and immensely flattered by each award bestowed upon me…I just read too many great blogs to choose only a few for an award. I feel the best way to spread blog love is to mention stellar posts in my Sunday Coffee series, and to re-tweet posts that resonate with me.

  1. I usually have excess toiletries on hand, too. I’m not sure why. I guess cause you never know? Good to be prepared? Who knows.

Very much admire your award policy and from what I’ve seen, you’re passing on the blog love in the best ways possible. Love it.

  2. This is one of my fave sundays with you 🙂

such a fab post, I love Bella, that post is brilliance! Katy Rose is amazing, I need to find the time to take part, your work is all so great! you are so funny too, love your lists. The gut-anything is tasty I am sure, being a vegetarian I will never know LOL (sometimes I have dirty dreams of Big Macs LOL)

ok, I need to get me some coffee, hope you are sleeping thight still 🙂 love, Anika

  3. Another funny and witty post to start Sunday with.
Most of the bloggers you mention are friends, too.
And I couldn´t agree more with you about spreading of love, and getting to know each other better.
    Have a super Sunday.
Un abrazo y mil besos guapa!!!

  4. I have too received many a backhanded compliment (mostly from my nan haha) Although, I think some people have diarrhoea of the mouth and so it probably is accidental. Her post was brilliantly funny though!
Anna Della Russo continues to amaze! I think if Carine Roitfeld had JPG’s mask, she would have matched Anna as her dress looks amazing!
I am not actually surprised by your ’10 things I like that you probably didn’t know I like’ list! haha
Also agree with Anika, your sunday coffee posts are awesome and this blog love is even better than awards!

  5. oooh, quite the tasty array of topics this sunday! i agree that katy has started something incredibly interesting and smart with friend friday. i know i always look forward to reading the interesting posts you guys churn out!

loved the outfit post over at citizen rosebud. so smart and funny. =)

  6. I love the way you did an obvious list, then did a more specific list. 🙂 You can never had enough tissues. I really like Bella of The Citizen Rosebud outfit because I just love people that do not look anyone else I have every seen before. It inspires me 🙂 Hope you had a wonderful weekend!

  7. Well first of all, a HUGE thank you for mentioning me in your blog post. YOU truly honor me. And I like looking at my mug on someoneelse’s blog, so hopefully you’re starting a trend, ha ha.

Regarding Friend Friday phenom, you’re so right. I noticed in the last list of Links ala Mode the plethora of FF posts, so Kudos to Katy for starting a really interesting series of conversations. Maybe I should head over to her blog right now to thank her.

And per usual your Sunday posts are full of great other places to check out, so here I go! xo. -Bella Q

  8. YES YES YES!!! I always LOVE Bella’s posts, she is so charming, witty, friendly and a genius to boot

Thanks to Katy too for Friend’s Friday posts, she is a star, and by golly no one can upstage Anna Dello Russo, and most of all KUDOS to you for every PERFECT Sunday Coffee posts

    Love and Adore you always
    J, xoxo

  9. Those pictures from Vogue are fabulous!! I love it! High fashion in its true definition!

Yes, Katy deserves a huge applause because Friend Friday is a huge hit! And that was such an awesome idea! And those pictures from Beauituflly Invisible;s post were hilarious! Totally made my day!

I love Greek food too! I definitely have to try that gut stew! LOL And rollerball pens are awesome!

    1. Girl, you might be the ONLY person besides me interested in gut stew. It’s call Mageritsa and it’s usually served around Easter. If you know any Greeks, get ’em to hook you up!

  10. V, thanks for the mention and all the love. I feel a little like the Little Engine that could. There were a couple rocky moments in the beginning but I love what Friend Friday has grown to be and the commitment of so many wo.Depaul bloggers. Mostly I love that it has given us fashion bloggers a chance to think and write deeply on related subjects, proving we are not just brainless lovers of clothing. – Katy

    1. You deserve the props, hon. As you said, it’s a great way to show that we aren’t just vacant, vain clotheshorses.

  11. Someone once told me my Roland Mouret skirt was “interesting,” and I accidentally said “thank you” before I realized that a “thank you” was probably not called for!

    1. HA! No doubt. Mouret…interesting?! Right. How on earth a Mouret skirt could just be “interesting” is beyond me. Don’t you hate it when they catch you off guard?

  12. Oh yes I know what Bella means. When I get backhanded compliments I’m usually speechless by the sheer rudeness but unsure of how to respond. I saw Anna’s oufit on and was blown away by the brilliance of it. And tissues- can never be without them or I feel lost!

  13. This outfit of Anna Dello Russo is just unbelievable isn’t it? Saw it in the NY Times the other day and did not recognise her (the point of a masked ball I guess) – here is a woman living and breathing her fashion fantasy!
Big cheer for Katy Rose and Friend Friday!
Looking forward to your tagged post!

  14. Bella is a hoot! And there’s no good way to respond to a backhanded compliment, I never know if I should just chalk it up to lack of tact or what.

And I LOVE the way you summed up your blog in 5 words. So perfect. I’m going to remember that the next time I get stressed out by something blog related. Hope you had a good weekend!

    xoxo, Ashley

  15. Love the shots from that Vogue party… Anna Della Russo definitely stole the show.

Back-handed compliments are always fun… I never know whether to say thanks, or whether to smack the person (depending on who it’s from, of course thanking usually wins out). That porcelain white teeth comment may be the best I’ve ever read, though!

I always enjoy reading answers to the “award” questions. Strangely enough, I understand re: the Greek comfort food, because I also love Serbian comfort food and there are definite similarities! For some reason I think you know this already, but I have a crush on Eminem, and although I am impartial to anesthesia, I think laughing gas is a great invention!

  16. Quick note – speaking of Eminem, did you see his 60 Minutes interview with Anderson Cooper? Ill fitting for the program but interesting nonetheless – especially the editing.
