Friend Friday: Did you really wear that?

September 17, 2010 · 57 comments

This week’s Friend Friday* subject is a bit of a mixed bag—one part blending blog and work wear, one part blog wear reality check. In introducing this week’s topic, Katy wrote:

…how many times have you looked at a post and thought the blogger was adorable but probably wore the outfit only to take pictures and post to the blog?

My immediate response is: never. I don’t really care whether someone wore an outfit featured in a blog post in reality or not. The only thing that pops in my head is whether I like the outfit or not. And the overall photography and effect. But on to the questions…

When it comes to outfit posts on your own blog, be honest, are they what you actually wore that day?
Sometimes they are, sometimes they aren’t. I don’t promise anything on my blog in terms of fashion; the only thing I will say is that the pieces I wear on my blog are indeed from my closet—they are not costumes. I have worn everything photographed on my blog in real life, in some manifestation or another, at some point. I tend to dress on the edge a bit—it’s not just blog fodder.

Below is a menagerie of ensembles I actually wore—shopping, to church, to the movies, to my car dealership (and even to the doctor)—on the day I shot the photo.

Can you guess what I wore where?**

If you’re so inclined, answers appear below.

For a fashion blogger, working in a corporate environment can be tricky. How do you mesh your day job with your personal style choices?
I did a whole post on this after I was asked a question on Formspring about whether I dress more conservatively for work, and then a commenter asked for tips on office dresssing. To read my philosophy on work wear and my strategies for blending work wear/blog wear/casual wear, see Worker V 1.1 (+ My Office Wear Strategy). Check back soon for a Worker V post that specifically addresses remixing components of outfits I’ve worn on the blog for the office.

Oh, and by the way, I just discovered the bloody Formspring link in my post footer was broken. Sheesh. It’s fixed now, so feel free to use it!

When you get dressed in the morning, do you think what should I wear to work or what should I wear for the blog?
If I’m going into the office, I am only concerned about my appearance there. It takes precedence. When I shoot office wear for the blog, I do it at the end of the day, when I get home from work. If I’m at home and just want to shoot some fun stuff for the blog, only then do I think, what should I wear for the blog?

Do professionals you interact with ever make comments about your clothing choices?
Yes, all the time. They are usually compliments, or people ask where I purchased a particular piece. There is a lovely South American woman in my work commissary that calls me “elegant lady” in her fantastic accent, every time I see her, without fail. I adore her. And the cashiers in my work cafeteria regularly peek over the counter to check out my shoes and comment on them. That happened just yesterday, in fact. What’s not to love? It makes me smile and I try to be gracious and appreciative.

Some bloggers openly admit to wearing outfits only for the blog post. What’s your opinion on that?
I occasionally wear something just for a blog photo shoot, but as I wrote above, everything I wear I’ve worn before, in my personal life. And again, I could care less whether someone plays dress up for their blog or not. If I like it, I like it.

As far as my blog goes, it is a creative outlet for me, first and foremost; I don’t feel compelled to follow any rules other than to be true to myself. If I started posting what I wear when I’m sitting around watching TV, I’m pretty sure I’d lose all my readers, stat. The blogs I find most compelling are not the girl-next-door-shoots-a-photo-in-the-middle-of-her-street-with-the-same-cutesy-mouth-slightly-agape-look. I’ve never subscribed to saccharine, cheerleader-type normality. I’m far more interested in shoots of the Vogue Gone Rogue ilk, or really creative (and quirky) mixups of trends and everyday wear, like on Style of a Fashionista and Beckerman Bite Plate. I want to be inspired, stimulated, even provoked. I read a variety of blogs, but the ones I love most are daring, intelligent, and sarcastic.

For me, fashion blogs are largely entertainment. And to some degree, they must be entertainment for you as well since  (interestingly enough), my two most commented posts are also a couple of my most OTT looks…funny, that…

*The Friend Friday project by Modly Chic is a way for bloggers to share more about themselves and create a friendly connection with other bloggers. Katy of Modly Chic sends us questions weekly, and we answer on our blogs.

**Answers to what I wore, where:

  1. Shopping, minus the trench.
  2. To church.
  3. A lace dress for a doctor appointment…oh yes I did.
  4. Shopping, my outfit for the day. One of my faves.
  5. To church.
  6. Shopping, and no, I’m not kidding. I wore a bikini cover up over a bikini top and leggings—to the mall.
  7. To the car dealership for a service.
  8. To see Sex and the City 2 with a gal pal.

Sharing is good

Love this post, also agree that when I look at outfit posts i don’t really think about whether they really wear it or not, who cares? They’re expressing themselves creatively and stylishly!
Your wardrobe must be bursting from work-wear and fashion bits! Still madly in love with the convertible frock and grey jumpsuit! smokin’ darling!

My adorable V, thanks a lot for remembering my request, but as most things in life they sort themselves out while we worry sick about them. Blogspot has made some changes automatically that iproves them and offers bigger pictures, so I am ok with the way my blog looks at the moment. Thanks anyway for being there and always so caring.
I love you in colour, perphaps because I love colour…he, he.
You are so wise and so thorough that I have nothing more to say.

About the color…thank you. I’m really bad about wearing a ton of black and often go in phases with it, as you can see lately!

As usual, I agree with all you’ve said here! I dress up for me, not for the blog. If I’m wearing something that I feel like sharing, I take a few pictures before going out. The first thing I think of when I’m getting ready is, “Is this weather-appropriate?” and, like you, I don’t ever wonder why or where a blogger is wearing their outfit. I just appreciate it for what it is! :)

V. I completely adore you. I have to admit that I do wonder if people wore things on their blog out for shopping or to work, etc. mainly because I am curious how they negotiate a day of standing on super tall heels or if they could bike in a pencil skirt to their campus or office job, and I wonder because I am constantly inspired by the blogs that I read (and there are a great variety of them) so I’d like to know if their outfits were as successful in real life as they are on their blogs.

I want to ask, though, were you clothes shopping in the bikini and cover up? I ask because I often feel that if I don’t wear an actual bra while shopping I don’t necessarily get a real sense of how something will fit me up top. I’m wondering if you felt like that was an issue.

LHdM…thank you! I really do traipse through my everyday life in outrageously tall heels.

To answer your question, I was shoe shopping when I sported the bikini top and cover up with leggings. But I think the bra thing is all relative. I can shop with or without one…but everyone has their thing. I can usually tell how something will fit up top no matter what, but it really all depends on how much bosom we are blessed with, doesn’t it?

I love your answers.
Whenever my post goes up you’ll see that I mostly agree. I get annoyed if a blogger presents themself as someone who takes photos of what they wore that day, but really didn’t wear that outfit.
I totally understand getting dressed up, taking photos and posting them, even if you didn’t really wear it out, but at least be honest about it. I’d rather see someone say “I love my outfit, I took the photos today, but didn’t have to go anywhere in it.” Than to have someone lie about where they wore it.

But, then again, as you point out, who cares? If it’s your blog, you can do whatever you want. So maybe it shouldn’t be an issue…

I agree with you totally on this. I prefer shots that look like they haven’t taken to much effort to put together. For me, I don’t have a choice as my shots are not of me but of other people and what they. Can you imagine if I said to someone in the street, can you just go home and change your shoes before I get you photo as I don’t really like them. Not going to happen. Anyway, great post as always and let me know if you are going to make it downunder next year.

i’m right there with you. i don’t care at all if a blogger has worn an outfit in real life or not. there are so many bloggers that already post their daily outfits, and there’s nothing wrong with it, but if we all did it then how boring would that get? i love going to a blog and seeing the personality of a person, and i definitely don’t enjoy blogs that are trying too hard to be like someone else or fit the “formula.” being yourself is so important in blogging.

You know, I’m getting pretty riled up about this little controversy. I can only speak for myself, but I blog as a creative outlet. I’m not forcing anyone to read it, if you don’t like it, you don’t have to read it. I usually wear the blog outfits at some point or another, but it doesn’t necessarily occur on the day photos are taken. Moreover, my clothing experimentation on the blog usually inspires me to mix things up in real life outfits too. Sometimes I find that I like something I put together for the sheer purpose of blog dress-up so much that I do wear it out, even if it wasn’t my original intention. I’m never buying new clothes solely for the blog, they serve my real life as well. So I really don’t see the problem if I wear something that day or at all! I’m glad you have similar sentiments. I see these types of complaints a lot and I think they are really silly. I’m glad to finally have a little outlet to air my grievances.

I’m with you! I could care less what a blogger wears in “real life.” I’m not a personal style blogger, so I don’t do outfit posts. But my blog is a creative outfit, and in many ways, I’m using it to explore fantasy. Fashion has a lot to do with fantasy, no?

Since I don’t do out fit posts, I got to sit back, relax, and read what everyone else does during this edition of Friend Friday. I agree with what you said re: whether or not a blogger wears an outfit in real life. The thought doesn’t usually cross my mind. Instead, I usually end up thinking “wow, why didn’t I think of that combination?!” (especially on your blog!). Ultimately, though, I think the most successful bloggers are the ones that are always true to themselves in what they post.

I love that this is really who you are – and it’s no surprise that you get compliments here, at work, and elsewhere!

ha! brings back memories…..in my youth i wore some pretty wild looks, including to my (numerous) doc appts. a fave was a white lace blouse with black bra.

30 years on, i still see one of those docs for continuing troubles…..he always returns my calls lickety-split! : )

i don’t care much either if someone’s posting an outfit ‘exactly as worn’ or not…but it seems that some type of real world constraint usually results in a more interesting look – the really out there stuff seems to already happen on the runways, in mags, etc.
