With just a few days left in 2009, I’ve been thinking about the year in fashion: the highs (those thigh-high boots); the lows (harem pants); who made strides (Fergie); who left me scratching my head (Jennifer Lopez). Amongst the many fashionistas, stylists, heavy-hitters and hangers-on, one woman stands out as the Most Valuable (fashion) Player of 2009. Some might also say she deserves Most Improved as well, but her transition from LA-skanky to uber-swanky has been at least two years in the making.
For this woman, change is no stranger. She regularly changes her hair, nail polish, and continents—but this year, it appears that she also underwent a bit of a physical transformation that was absolutely for the better. I will not point out the obvious except to say that in spite of my natural inclination to think more is better, in this instance, less is certainly more. And no, I’m not talking about continent-hopping, chameleon extraordinaire Madonna. (Of course “less” really isn’t in Madge’s vocab unless it pertains to her weight, right?) No my dears, the lady I’m referring to is none other than the appealingly skinny, fantastically chic, perfectly British, Victoria Beckham.
And thus, without further ado, I declare Victoria Beckham as Fashion’s Most Valuable Player of 2009! Because Victoria is not only well-dressed no matter the occasion, she is well-coiffed, well-versed in French (Hermes, Louboutin), and enviably well-shod. Since 2007, she’s made an amazing and laudable personal transformation. Gone are the fake tan, fake blond hair, fake nails, and fake…well, you get the picture. The new Victoria is feminine, edgy, and sophisticated. Classy sexy. So I say well done, Victoria, well-done.
