Been thinking about this quite a bit lately, the whole I-need-a-rock-of-an-engagement-ring phenomenon. In the latest celeb news, Pete Wentz waxes philosophic about how fiancée Ashlee Simpson’s impromptu engagement ring is not a “conflict diamond.” Then here comes Carmen Electra with her black diamond, ’cause the whole Til Death Do Us Part gurney photos with ex Dave Navarro just was not freaky enough.
Having been there, done that with the whole diamond thing, I’ve reconsidered my perspective of them. They’re lovely, don’t get me wrong. A three-carat emerald cut in set platinum would definitely move me to tears, I’ll admit that. BUT…I’m kind of over subscribing to that whole formula. It’s crazy to spend $30K on a ring…think of the vacation you could have instead! At the end of the day, it’s just a damn ring, and the rocked are no more married than the rockless. Whether it’s yellow, white, black, pink, big, small, high-quality, or shit, what matters is the marriage, not the ring.
So what I know for myself is that if I should ever walk down the aisle again, I do not want a rock.
A simple band is enough and these days, I think more interesting than yet another big honking diamond. It is a symbol of a union, not the union, yet so many first-time brides spend more time thinking about their ring than their marriage. Plus, I rather like the spartan aspect of just a simple band which I can actually wear no matter what I’m doing (you really can’t do that with a diamond engagement ring). I am grateful to have had the diamond experience, and I loved it while I was in love with the man that gave it to me. I learned a lot from him and that marriage. But since that era of my life will be officially over within a couple months, I’d rather leave both the marriage and the symbol of it to days gone by.
